Summer is Coming. Pay attention to water safety!
I. It is hot in summer. Water activity is one of the most popular ways to cool off on hot days. Drowning statistics shows that most drowning incidents occur in the river and at the beach. Before summer, the Taijiang National Park Headquarters offers the following information to reduce drowning by promoting safety for water recreation activities.
IV. The Taijiang National Park Headquarters allows two areas for water recreation activities:
- Correct ways to play in the water:
- Go to safe swimming places instead of swimming at an unknown terrain or any unfamiliar stream, river or lake.
- Choose a qualified venue with lifesavers.
- Play in water with comfortable water and air temperature.
- Leave the water immediately when a big thunderstorm or earthquake comes.
- It is dangerous to play in the water alone. Children and adolescents should be accompanied by adults.
- Water safety promotion:
- Five steps for saving a drowning victim: (Yell, call, stretch, throw, row and protect yourself before saving a drowning victim)
- Yell: Cry out for help.
- Call: Call 119, 118, 110 or 112.
- Stretch: Stretch out using a bamboo pole or twig.
- Throw: Throw floating objects such as a ball, string or bottle.
- Row: Use a large floating object (such as a boat, a piece of floating wood, a lifebuoy ring, a floating beacon, or a styrofoam block) and row to the victim.
- Ten tips for drowning prevention:
- Tip 1: Swim in legit places that are equipped with lifesaving equipment and lifeguards.
- Tip 2: Avoid dangerous behavior. No diving.
- Tip 3: Be very careful when swimming in a lake or creek because the bed depth of lake and creek varies a lot.
- Tip 4: Swim with a buddy. Pay attention to your company’s condition, location at any time.
- Tip 5: Warm up before swimming. No jeans.
- Tip 6: No frolicking or mischief in water.
- Tip 7: Do not swim or play in the water if you are tired or not feeling well.
- Tip 8: Do not stay in water for too long. Be careful with hypothermia.
- Tip 9: Always check the weather. Don’t swim if the weather is bad.
- Tip 10: Improve swimming and floating skills. Stay calm and relaxed should you fall in the water.

- Stop swimming immediately. Stay afloat. Stretch the cramped muscles.
- Relax and stay balanced.
- When treading water, keep your nose and mouth above the water only. Move your arms and legs slowly.
- If you're exhausted, wave your arms for help, float on your back and wait for rescue.
- Cramping prevention:
- Don’t enter the water if you feel ill or tired.
- Don’t enter the water if the water temperature is too low.
- Warm up before entering the water.
- Do not enter the water right before or after a meal or after strenuous exercise.
- Always keep hydrated. Don't push yourself too hard when you swim.

IV. The Taijiang National Park Headquarters allows two areas for water recreation activities:
- Partial zones of the usage zones in the Control (1) Qigu Lagoon Area of the General Control Area and Recreation (1) Qigu Liukong Wharf Service Area are allowed. The areas available are limited to the scope in the attached picture (Attachment 1). These areas cover the water at the north of Liukong Wharf and the fish farm experience area behind the Liukong Service Station.
- Water recreation activities are not allowed except for the areas above. The exceptions are emergency rescue, performance of official business and approved situations.
