“Biking and Birdwatching Spring Trip at Shanhai Canal” event

The Taijiang National Park has diverse wetlands, including the fish farm, abandoned salt fields, mudflats and river mouth bars. The downstream of Yanshui River and Chianan Irrigation are located in the Yanshui Estuary Wetlands, a national wetlands and adjacent to one of the two national wetlands in Taiwan, Sicao Wetlands. Abundant animals and plants live in this diverse wetlands environment. Migratory or wintering birds can take in nutrients and rest here. Many little egrets and intertidal zone animals such as fiddlers and mudskippers, perch in the mangrove forest along the shore. The black-winged stilt, wild duck, black-faced spoonbill, pied avocet and himantopus come here for wintering.

When spring comes, these migratory birds will gradually return to their breeding grounds in the north for reproduction. In the warm, blooming spring days and when migratory birds are about to return to the north, the Headquarters did not forget the promise for visitors to bike around Taijiang every spring. This year the Headquarters will hold the “Biking and Birdwatching Spring Trip at Shanhai Canal” event on March 9. Staff will lead visitors to bike in the breeze from the area under the Guanhai Bridge to the west along the Yanshui River, make a turn at the estuary to the Shanhai Canal and bike along the Chianan Irrigation canal to the east. This bike route is about 10 kms. Bikers will become familiar with the abundant estuary resources and the habitat of migratory birds along the way. Visitors can learn about this bird paradise adjacent to Tainan in this slow, Lohas bike trip.
