The land area of the Taijiang National Park (wetlands included) is 5090 ha and its vertical distance is 25 km. The land area contains the reclaimed land, estuary marsh, abandoned salt field and fish farm. And different kinds of fish farms. The fish farm connected with the National Park is the economic resource of coastal locals. A Chinese idiom says that, “the mountain dweller lives off the mountain, the shore dweller lives off the sea.” Aquaculture becomes an important economic resource for locals here. This place is also a major base of the breeding experiment for the development of national aquaculture. The Taijiang National Park Headquarters was founded here in 2009. It's an honor for us to be neighbors with the Mariculture Research Center, Fisheries Research Institute, COA.
The Mariculture Research Center has been founded a hundred years ago (1918-2018). It is the achievement made by numerous pioneers who overcame all obstacles along the way. The history began from Japanese rule (1918-1945). In 1918, the Office of the Taiwan Governor-General set up the Seawater Agriculture Testing Ground in Shang Kun Shen, Hsiao Chung Village, Tainan Prefecture. Back in that time, milkfish and oyster farming was the focus of the research. In 1941, it was renamed as the Office of the Taiwan Governor-General Fisheries Research Institute Tainan Branch. The focus of the research shifted to the survey on the milkfish and tiger prawn farming and the aquaculture environment. During the Taiwan Provincial Government Period (1945-1999), this branch was renamed as the Taiwan Provincial Administrative Executive Office Fisheries Research Institute Tainan Branch. During that time, people focused on the improvement of milkfish and oyster farming. Artificial propagation of grass carp, silver carp and mullet is also important. Another important job is the research on the mass production of tilapia for military. Back in those days, tilapia was known as the military fish.
Since 1999, the Tainan and Taishi Branches were merged into one and renamed as the Mariculture Research Center, Fisheries Research Institute, COA due to the restructuring of Taiwan Provincial Government. The headquarters of the Center is in Qigu (the current location). Now the studies focus on the aquaculture of economic marine fish. The Taishi Branch puts emphasis on studies on economic shellfish farming. Now, studies on Taiwanese aquarium fish have entered the maturity of genetically modification technology. Lots of genetically modified fishes are in the market. The genetically modified aquatic life field border test facility was built in Qigu as the test and evaluation institutions of aquatic lives in Taiwan. The purpose of the facility is effective control of genetically modified fish in the market. The aquaculture of grouper achieved significant achievements in this stage, and stimulating the prosperity of the grouper industry in Taiwan nowadays.
The Mariculture Research Center has been helping us a lot on the “Habitat Creation Plan Friendly for the Black-Faced Spoonbill” since 2011, including the creation of aquaculture environment, fish examination and the consultation on the current situation of surrounding fishery environment. Thanks to the help of the Center, we achieved significant achievements in conservation of black-faced spoonbill and habitat conservation of migratory birds. There is a shallow-water milkfish aquaculture test pool up to 30 ha in the area managed by the Center. This type of wetland is critical to the conservation of the black-faced spoonbill and wintering birds.
The Mariculture Research Center, Fisheries Research Institute in Qigu has been founded a hundred years. Its contribution to aquaculture in Taiwan has exceeded the visible economic benefits in the market these days. The Center has expanded the scope of aquaculture and outputs the aquaculture of Taiwan to the allies of Taiwan to benefit the citizens of the allies. The food shortage occurs around the world these days. Aquatic products are one of the good protein sources for human. Taiwan takes the lead in aquaculture. The Mariculture Research Center, Fisheries Research Institute plays an indispensable role in aquaculture.
