Shifting into fall and winter, with the north wind, the protected black-faced spoonbills migrate from thousands of miles away to Taijiang National Park to spend the winter. In order to make people know the importance of protecting black-faced spoonbill, Taijiang National Park hosts the opening ceremony of Taijiang Black-faced Spoonbill Season 2017 Creative Activities To Preserve Black-faced Spoonbill on September 23rd, 2017, along with five workshops that would enable visitors to experience the ecological features of Taijiang through five senses activities. The five workshops include sculpting stamps for Stamping Taijiang, colored cookie workshop of Sweet Taijiang, paper chimes of Hearing Taijiang, porcelain molding of Art of Taijiang, and embroidery of Printing Taijiang. Let’s look at the grand occasion on that day.

▲Taijiang black-faced spoonbill season begins from September 23rd, 2017 and runs until March 31st, 2018. It falls on fall and winter. First batch of black-faced spoonbills has arrived at Taijiang National Park. The area of Taijiang National Park and its surroundings are the primary habitat in winter for black-faced spoonbills, and over half of the global population resides here. Since its establishment, Taijiang National Park Headquarters has been working on basic research in the ecological system of black-faced spoonbills banding and conducting a general survey on the group, along with studies on their food source from bird-friendly aquaculture and management of their habitat, in addition to publicizing conservation and educational promotion. With the increase of the global population of black-faced spoonbills year by year, Park Headquarters plays a leading role. The Headquarters invites various government departments, local community, and Non-Government Organization to host a grand opening ceremony for the event, Taijiang Black-faced Spoonbill Season 2017 Creative Activities To Preserve Black-faced Spoonbill, urging the public to get involved in protecting black-faced spoonbills. A water recreation camp is also held in Taijiang National Park on the same day. People can sign up to experience the fun in canoeing for free. Canoeing conveys not only low carbon travel but also an important concept of ecological preservation because it is not driven by power and doesn’t produce pollution.。

▲Five workshops, Stamping Taijiang, Sweet Taijiang, Hearing Taijiang, Art of Taijiang and Printing Taijiang are lauched in the event. Some needs to be signed up in advance and some can be applied for on the site. Each workshop blends Taijiang ecological image in the handicraft production. Many adults bring kids to take part in the activity on this day. It is important to educate their ecological protection at young age.
▲On the day of the event, the NGO groups such as Taiwan Black-faced Spoonbill Conservation Association, Tainan City Bird Association, and Endemic Species Research Institute etc, are invited to join the event. Some are game stalls free of charge and offer free gifts and some stalls sell books, souvenirs, etc. Taijiang Headquarters also sells souvenirs with Taijiang features like cute throw pillows with black-faced spoonbill patterns.

▲At the beginning of the event, the taiko drum show brought by an elementary school is very powerful and then the volunteers of Taijiang National Park play as black-faced spoonbills, dancing with the song “Black-faced La Pue”, which is the first song to promote preservation of black-faced spoonbills. All the attendees are proud of this group of senior volunteers and then Yu Teng-Liang, the newly-appointed Director of Taijiang National Park, gives a speech. He welcomes black-faced spoonbills to Taijiang for wintering and shares his feelings with the attendees when he sees black-faced spoonbills. He invites everybody to watch black-faced spoonbills at Taijiang National Park in the coming half year.
▲After the hustle and bustle of opening shows and Director’s speech, the guests take part in the event of embroidery of Printing Taijiang and print the beautiful images of black-faced spoonbills on the paper, which reveals strong art spirit.
▲On that day, visitors can sign up on the site to experience the embroidery event of Taijiang black-faced spoonbills. Besides black-faced spoonbills pattern, fiddler crabs and plants at Taijiang patterns are available, too.
▲Stamping Taijiang workshop is for sculpting stamps. Visitors use Yin-Yang sculpting skills to sculpt Taijiang black-faced spoonbill on the eraser. And then it comes cute black-faced spoonbill one after one.
▲The paper with unique black-faced spoonbill stamps becomes a unique postcard. The workshop puts a lot of effort into blending local ecology in the sculpting stamps.
▲Sweet Taijiang workshop is for making colored cookies. Visitors can use their creativity to squeeze syrup on the bird-shaped cookies.
▲Hearing Taijiang workshop is for making paper chimes. Build a three-dimensional shape by cutting out the pattern on the paper. Some kids draw cars, some draw butterflies and some draw crabs. It is an interesting activity.
▲Art of Taijiang workshop is for molding porcelain. A crab appears with eight legs and two sharp tips on his shell. Isn’t the crab porcelain plate creative?
▲The water recreation camp of Taijiang National Park Headquarters allows the visitors to row boats with ease and safety in an enclosed body of water. It’s a fantastic activity.
▲Taijiang National Park Administration and Visitor Center is a hot tourist spot in the early time in Tainan. It features stilt houses above the fish farm around with bushes, reeds and aquatic birds. It blends the idea of Taiwan traditional architecture “Cheng” in the design.
▲We keep the original fish farm and design natural revetments. Visitors can come to Taijiang National Park at any time to feel the natural environment where we coexist with other creatures.
