Promote the sustainable conservation of sandbanks Combine non-governmental forces to carry out sandbank afforestation
Along the recent global climate change, sea level rising and other factors have resulted in the Qigu Lagoon and sandbanks becoming smaller and smaller due to the scouring of the waves. In addition, the sandbank lacks sand sources resulting in the entire coastline shrinking for many years. The original shelterbelt forest has also collapsed and gradually withered, thus endangered the safety of the lagoon. It is necessary to take relevant countermeasures to maintain the sustainability of the overall sandbank land and the beauty of the natural landscape.
In view of this, the Taijiang National Park Administration (hereinafter referred to as Taijiang Office) and the Tse-Xin Organic Agriculture Foundation (hereinafter referred to as the TOAF) have cooperated to carry out the project of "Symbiosis with Localities - Consolidating the Key Sandbanks of the Lagoon with Coastal Afforestation and Safeguarding the Natural and Cultural Heritage of Taijiang National Park" based on the concept of the "Satoumi" (Ocean sustainability management). Its purpose is to enhance the ecological habitat function and biodiversity of wetlands and coasts, increase the resilience of environmental and climate change, and strengthen the natural carbon sink, while taking into account the economic benefits of agriculture and fisheries, and preserving the cultural heritage to achieve sustainable ecological goals.
Adhering to the concept of "Building a Green Great Wall and Guarding the Coast for centuries", since 2015, the TOAF has carried out coastal afforestation tasks from point to plane in 13 counties and cities across Taiwan, reviving the difficult coastal afforestation work. The afforestation work carried out at the Wangzailiao Sandbank of Taijiang Office was mainly aimed at the narrowest part of the sandbank being severely scoured for a long time, and accumulated sand through sand fixed hedges to increase the sand sources. In addition, in the existing windbreak, new trees and casuarina forests are renewed to avoid wind breaking through. Through endless dedication to sand fixation, and stabilize the sandbanks, the overall sandbank was gradually elevated to prevent the waves from washing the sand away. Also, by planting mangroves on the inner side of the lagoon and expanding the area of mangroves, the terrain and landform of the entire special landscape area can be stabilized, increasing the silt of the sea bank, which ultimately achieving the goal of expanding the area of sandbanks, creating biodiversity, and enriching fishery resources. The TOAF emphasis its target on the land of key sandbanks, expecting to plant a total of 70,000 trees in 3 years and reaching a total afforestation area of 15.7 hectares with appropriate methods on the coast.
In particular, at 10 A.M. on the 18th of December (Friday), Taijiang Office held the "Signing Ceremony of the Afforestation Memorandum for the Wangzailiao Sandbank of Taijiang National Park" at the first screening room of the Visitor Center. Chief Executive Su Mujung and Director Hsien Weisong signed this Memorandum together. Through this alliance, they will make great strides together in the future. Cheng Liyi, the Director of the TOAF, is also invited to share her experience on the topic of "Protecting the Beauty of the Sustainable Landscape of the Taijiang Sandbanks - Discussion about Afforestation on the Coasts of the Wangzailiao Sandbank". In the afternoon, there is the Taijiang Ecological Experience - Sicao Lake Ecological Observation Activity and people who are interested are welcome to sign up online (registration [link]; with limited vacancy).
