Taijiang National Park Nursery Launched, Contributing to Conservation of Native Flora

The Taijiang National Park Headquarters (TJNP), under the National Park Service of the Ministry of the Interior, is committed to conserving various rare plants within the park and promoting the concept of native plant landscaping. Since 2020, operations related to setting up a nursery began, and as of 2023, the trial operation of the nursery has been nearing completion for one year. On November 21, 2023, TJNP will conduct a simple unveiling ceremony, with the aspiration of transforming the nursery into a germplasm center for native flora in Taijiang through the concerted efforts of local partners.

Taijiang National Park, a wetland-type national park, primarily encompasses landscapes such as lagoons, tidal flats, wetlands, and offshore river mouth sandbars within its terrestrial scope. Different habitats correspond to coastal protective forests, sandy and saline plants, fishpond surrounding vegetation, and mangroves. Director Hsieh Wei-Song of TJNP noted that native plants, having harmonized with the local environment over long periods, are perfectly adapted to the local climate and are the best materials for the park’s green beautification efforts. To actively implement the ex-situ conservation strategy for rare plants and continuously provide nursery stocks for greening, native vegetation construction, and defense against invasive species in the Taijiang area, the nursery operations began in 2020. TJNP thanks the Tainan City Government for allocating land and Professor Tsung-Hsin Hsieh from National University of Tainan, who, along with his student team, assisted in the trial operation of the nursery. To date, the nursery has cultivated at least 40 diverse native plant species including trees, shrubs, vines, and herbaceous plants.

Moving forward, TJNP will continue to implement three strategic dimensions: conservation of rare plant species in the Taijiang area, cultivation of green beautification nursery stocks for managed sites, and promotion of native plant landscaping in community protection circles. The nursery will focus on cultivating a variety of species including trees, shrubs, vines, and ground-cover plants, using a small-scale cultivation approach as the core of the nursery program. Volunteers and local partners are also invited to assist in the basic operational tasks of the nursery, collectively shaping it into a central hub for native plant germplasm in the Taijiang area.
