Post-Disaster Restoration of Wangzailiao Sandbar Trail Area in Taijiang National Park Continues; Southern Trail Area to Open on August 18

Typhoon Doksuri’s storm circle passed through the southern region of Taiwan on July 27 and 28, 2023, causing severe damage across various locations. Following the typhoon, on July 29, the Taijiang National Park Headquarters (TJNP) conducted an initial inspection and cleanup work. On July 31, Director Hsieh Wei-Song of Taijiang National Park Headquarters personally led a team to inspect the damage at the Wangzailiao Sandbar. Significant damage was noted on the northern side of the trail and along the side facing the Taiwan Strait, with a large amount of marine debris obstructing the paths.

Thanks to the tireless efforts of the cleaning staff over several days, approximately 10 tons of marine debris have been cleared from the southern side of the Wangzailiao Sandbar Trail area, passing through the security forest to the Great Pavilion Trail along the Taiwan Strait. This section of the trail has been deemed safe, and following a joint inspection by various agencies, community leaders from Qigu District, and recreational rafting operators on August 16 at 3 PM, it was agreed that this part of the trail could be reopened. Therefore, TJNP will reopen this section on August 18 for recreational activities.

Moving forward, TJNP hopes that recreational rafting operators in the Qigu Lagoon area will assist in transforming the environmental debris and damages caused by the typhoon into educational materials for ecological tours. They are encouraged to promote the importance of environmental conservation to visitors, including reducing the use of disposable plastic products and ensuring that no trash is left behind, to collectively maintain our beautiful homeland.
