Wangzailiao Sand Bar Circular Trail Fully Reopened

After 10 months of extensive reconstruction following the damage caused by Typhoon Doksuri, the Wangzailiao Sand Bar Circular Trail has been fully restored and is now open to the public. Visitors can once again stroll along the trail to experience the rich natural ecology and the beauty of Wangzailiao Sand Bar.

Gradual Improvements, Phased Access, Uninterrupted Trail Services

Typhoon Doksuri, which struck in July 2023, caused severe damage to the Wangzailiao Sand Bar Circular Trail, with debris scattered across both the windbreak forest and the trail itself. To restore public access as quickly as possible, the Taijiang National Park Headquarters (TJNPH) adopted a phased improvement plan. By August of the same year, the debris had been cleared, and the eastern and southern sections of the trail were reopened to facilitate visitor activities. The western side, which faces the Taiwan Strait and sustained the most damage, required re-routing and reconstruction, which was completed in April 2024. Recently, improvements to the northern section were also finalized. With the entire Wangzailiao Sand Bar Circular Trail system now fully renovated, visitors are invited to explore this scenic and ecologically important destination.

Multi-Faceted Conservation Efforts

Alongside the phased restoration of the trail, the TJNPH has implemented wave-reduction barriers at Wangzailiao Sand Bar to mitigate the effects of impacts from ocean swells. Additionally, bamboo oyster racks and wood recycled from the site have been employed to block marine debris and driftwood from entering the windbreak forest. In collaboration with the Tse-Xin Organic Agriculture Foundation, reforestation efforts and sand dune fencing have been undertaken to restore the windbreak forest and strengthen sand resources. These comprehensive measures aim to preserve the beauty of Wangzailiao Sand Bar for future generations, with the hope that visitors will get to know help protect this serene sand bar environment.
