Protecting Taijiang’s Wildlife Together: Illegal Gill Nets Harm Wildlife and Wallets
During a monitoring survey conducted on November 14, 2024, the Taijiang National Park commissioned team discovered three illegal gill nets within the Zengwun Estuary Black-Faced Spoonbill Reserve in Qigu District. Upon being notified, the Taijiang National Park Headquarters (hereinafter “TNPH”) immediately reported the matter to the 7th Division of the Seventh Special Police Corps, Ministry of the Interior (hereinafter “7th Division”), which increased patrols and enforcement in the area. The use of such gill nets violates Article 13, Paragraph 1, Item 8 of the National Park Law and the prohibited activities within Taijiang National Park, which ban the use of equipment intended to hunt, injure, or poison wildlife. Violators are subject to a fine of NT$3,000, except in cases of traditional fishing gear.
To safeguard the ecological environment and the feeding and habitat safety of migratory birds wintering in the reserve, TNPH, in collaboration with the 7th Division, removed the gill nets on November 22, 2024. During the operation, an additional gill net was discovered nearby, bringing the total to four nets removed. These nets blocked water flow, leading to the deaths of fish and crabs in the area. TNPH strongly reiterates that the ecological reserve is off-limits without prior permission, and the entry of hunting equipment into the area is strictly prohibited. Visitors are urged to comply with the regulations of the national park to avoid facing penalties and ensure the preservation of this vital ecosystem. TNPH, together with the Seventh Corps, will enhance patrols and enforcement to prevent similar incidents, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to protecting the natural environment and conserving the local ecosystem.
