Spring Excursion to Taijiang Wetlands for Birdwatching and Experiencing the Local Culture

As the Lunar New Year holiday approaches, those planning a trip to southern Taiwan to immerse themselves in nature may consider visiting Taijiang National Park. Located on Tainan’s northwest coast, this ecologically-rich wetland serves as an essential winter habitat for migratory birds and various wildlife. While birdwatching, visitors can also explore the local salt industry’s history and culture. Visitors are sincerely invited to embark on a journey to explore Taijiang.

During the 2025 Lunar New Year holiday, the Taijiang National Park Headquarters under the Ministry of the Interior’s National Park Service (hereinafter referred to as the Taijiang National Park Headquarters) welcomes visitors to its various recreational sites. The Taijiang National Park Visitor Center, Liukong Visitor Center, and Black-faced Spoonbill Birdwatching Pavilion will be closed on January 28 (New Year’s Eve), and reopen from January 29 (the first day of the Lunar New Year) to February 2 (the fifth day of the Lunar New Year). Those wishing to catch a glimpse of black-faced spoonbills and other winter migratory birds can visit the Black-faced Spoonbill Birdwatching Pavilion at Qigu, which offers guided tours and high-power telescopes for nature observation. Additionally, the Taijiang National Park Visitor Center in the Annan District of Tainan City features scheduled film screenings and guided tours. The second-floor exhibition room is where the exhibition Taijiang Legend—Tainan 400: Memories of the Sea and the Land is held, offering visitors a deeper understanding of local culture through the unique religious traditions of Taijiang.

Also located in Annan District, the Anshun Salt Field Story House will be open from January 30 (the second day of the Lunar New Year) to February 2 (the fifth day of the Lunar New Year). This site, originally the dormitories of salt makers, has been renovated and converted into a cultural exhibition space to showcase the salt industry. Visitors can learn about the history of Anshun Salt Field through scheduled guided tours and documentary screenings. Furthermore, a new attraction has been established this year. The Sicao Observation Post is located in the historically significant Luermen area, and the Taijiang National Park Headquarters has restored the structure after taking over its management, and set up an exhibit. It officially opened on May 26, 2024.Visitors can explore the exhibit to learn about the area’s rich history and culture, while also enjoying a glorious sunset where the sky meets the sea.
