TJNP and CTBC Financial Holding Launch ESG Partnership with Coastal Cleanup on International Day for Biological Diversity

On May 22, the International Day for Biological Diversity, the Taijiang National Park Headquarters (TJPNP) under the Ministry of the Interior’s National Park Service signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with CTBC Financial Holding Co., Ltd. to advance corporate ESG cooperation. Later that afternoon, National Park Service Director-General Wang Cheng-chi and CTBC President Rachael Kao led employees and staff to Chengxi Windbreak Forest, where they jointly carried out a crab protection and coastal cleanup activity. The event marked the opening of the 2025 crab conservation season, preparing the habitat for the upcoming breeding migration of the terrestrial crab Cardisoma carnifex.

Taijiang National Park Director Hsieh Wei-song noted that Chengxi Windbreak Forest is a hotspot for land crabs and home to Taiwan’s largest population of Cardisoma carnifex crabs. From June to November, egg-carrying females leave the forest, crossing roads and seawalls to release their larvae into the sea. In support of the International Day for Biological Diversity, CTBC’s subsidiaries—including CTBC Bank, Taiwan Life Insurance, CTBC Securities, and CTBC Investments—joined forces with Wetlands Taiwan, TJNP staff, and local volunteers. Together, they removed piles of polystyrene and other debris from the forest floor, helping ensure that the crabs can safely complete their migration while at the same time protecting the habitats and breeding grounds of all species within the Chengxi Windbreak Forest and safeguarding its rich biodiversity.

The coastal cleanup operation drew about 85 participants, who worked in teams to haul out large polystyrene blocks, collect fragments, and remove discarded litter such as cups, PET bottles, glass bottles, foil packs, straws, and caps. In total, roughly 850 kilograms of waste were cleared. By taking concrete action on this International Day for Biological Diversity, the partners not only safeguarded the habitats and breeding grounds of land crabs and other forest-dwelling species but also marked the launch of broader corporate ESG cooperation on crab conservation, wetland biodiversity management, and environmental education.
