Safeguarding Taijiang, Clean up the Sea, Learn About the Sea – Salute to the Seas
Taijiang National Park, located at the westernmost point of Taiwan, spans approximately 27 kilometers of coastline, covering Tainan City's Qigu and Annan Districts. It is Taiwan's only wetland - type national park, established in 2009 through local advocacy with the mission of protecting unique coastal landscapes, including lagoons, reclaimed land, wetlands, and offshore estuarine sandbars. The park is deeply rooted in the philosophy of “coexistence with the local community,” preserving its historical, natural, and industrial heritage.
The park’s coastline is characterized by sandbars, and its primary coastal industry revolves around open water oyster farming. However, from June to September, the southwest monsoon, tides, and typhoons often cause an accumulation of marine debris, including bamboo poles, polystyrene (Styrofoam), and fishing nets. To protect the landscape and reduce the impact of waste on coastal ecosystems, the park conducts regular patrols, monitoring, and cleanup operations.
Since 2020, the park has implemented the Executive Yuan's “Salute to the Seas” policy, promoting the concepts of “learn about the sea, clean up the sea, engage with and enter the sea.” This initiative includes coastal cleanup and maintenance, environmental education, and source reduction efforts. In addition to annual beach cleanup events and daily patrols, the park maintains equipment and manpower to address sudden cleanup needs. Emergency cleanups are promptly initiated after storms or large-scale debris accumulation along the coast.
As of the end of November 2024, the park has conducted over 900 marine environmental education sessions and cleared 1,777.6 metric tons of coastal debris. Furthermore, some bamboo and driftwood collected during cleanups are repurposed for dune stabilization and coastal protection, mitigating erosion and preserving sandbars. These efforts help slow the reduction of lagoon areas, safeguard local ecosystems, support fishermen's livelihoods, and enhance coastal defenses. By continuing to uphold the “Salute to the Seas” policy and the park’s founding mission, Taijiang National Park strives to maintain a sustainable ecological balance where the environment and community thrive together.
