The period between October and the following March is the period black-faced spoonbills spend their winter in Taiwan, and the period most suitable for watching winter migrants. To let the general public learn about the wetland ecology and the importance of preservation, Taijian National Park Administration (“Taijian Administration” hereinafter) organizes the “Taijian Black-faced Spoonbill Season” event series every year, and is doing so for the 9th year. “2021 Taijian Black-faced Spoonbill Season - Come on in, Black-faced Spoonbill!” was kick-started on October 16, 2011 at the plaza of Taijian National Park Visitor Center, and quite a few local conservation groups, government agencies, and communities participated enthusiastically, serving as a lively prelude to the subsequent series of events.

Joint promotion by local government agencies, groups, and communities at the opening ceremony

”Come on in, Black-faced Spoonbill” In the season when migratory birds fly to Taijian to live with us, Taijian Administration invites the public to warmly welcome them and go outdoors to learn about and protect the wetland ecology. Kicked-off by the passionate taiko drum team of Jhenhai Elementary School, Taijian Administration, local conservation groups, and government agencies participated in the opening ceremony for the Taijian Black-faced Spoonbill Season, which featured challenging games, e.g., Plant Puzzle, Animal Roll Call, Fun Q&A, 3D Origami DIY, Binoculars Use Instructions, and Net Casting Demonstration, through which the general public learned about the concepts of wetland ecology, habitat preservation, and citizen science. Communities of the Taijian Guardian Circle also took part; they introduced their community resources and sold agricultural and fishing specialties. By overcoming challenges and winning stamps, participants gained knowledge about preservation, as well as plenty of laughter. Participants gathering enough stamps could redeem their stamps for Taijian specialty souvenirs. Roughly a total of 600 people took part.

A series of exciting and diverse events allowing for experience of the ecology, production, and daily life of Taijian

Every day (except New Year’s Eve) during the six-month-long Taijian Black-faced Spoonbill Season, Taijian Administration assigns volunteers to give a commentary tour at the Qigu Black-faced Spoonbill Bird Watching Pavilion. High-power binoculars are set up on site for tourists to observe the birds and wetland ecology of Tseng-Wen River. In addition, what must not be missed are the Black-faced Spoonbill Season events launched every month. Such events include not only ecological observation, but also the experience of industries specific to Taijian, as well as community field trips, e.g., “Go Birdwatching on Bike”, “Go Explore Black-faced Spoonbills”, “Winter Star Watching in Taijian”, “Half-day Fresh Experience as a Farmer”, “Trip for Experience of Plant Ecology and Salt Fields”, “Taijian Communities Mini-trip”, “Taijian Handcrafts DIY”, and “Citizen Science Seminar”.
