Tidal flats and sandbanks

Tidal flats and sandbank are the most distinctive features of Taijiang national park landscape and land use. Because the coast shelf along Tainan area is flat and The rivers here flow into the sea slowly and carry a large amount of sediment, the sediment accumulates near the estuary and, affected by the wind, tide and waves, grows outwards, Simultaneously, a string of barrier islands formed in breaker zone.

During 1970s to 1980s, more than 2000 hectares of tidal flats in Cigu had been developed gradually.
Some of the new land were turned into salt-pans while some was used for fish ponds. 300 hectares on the north bank of the Zengwen River was made a wildlife reserve which attracts a large number of visitors every year who come to watch these elegant and rare birds.
There are six sandbanks from north to south in the park area and they are all under the impact of the waves and human development. The sandbanks are thus invaded and shrank backward in the speed of 25-100 meters annually.

Zengwen Estuary Wetlands
Zengwen Estuary Wetlands(international importance)
Covering 3,218 hectares at Zengwen River estuary in southwest Taiwan, the rich nutrient salts carried from upstream make the wetland home for a wide variety of wild creature at every level.
Sicao wetlands
Sicao wetlands(international importance)
The wetlands cover an area of 547 hectares. The wetlands of today were originally Beishanwei and Nanshan at the southern end of the Taijiang Inland Sea. In the floods brought by storm in 1823 Zengwen River changed its course and the large amount of sediment washed down from upstream deposited and created a new land in Taijiang Inland Sea, also splitting the sea into three saltwater lagoons: Kunshen, Sicao and Cigu lagoons.
Cigu Salt-pans Wetland
Cigu Salt-pans Wetland(national importance)
Covering 2,997, the wetland includes Cigu Lagoon and the salt fields on its east side. The salt fields cover 1,976 hectares. Developed in Japanese colonial period, They were once of the biggest salt-pans in Taiwan before its production ceased in 2002. In 1993, Binnan Industrial Park Project plaaned to include lagoons and salt-pans for the use of oil refineries and steelwroks. More than 100 conservation NGOs ran a 13-year environment protection campaign for saving precious wetland and black-faced spoonbills and thus preserved the wetland.
Yanshui Estuary wetlands
Yanshui Estuary wetlands(national importance)
At Yanshui River, these wetland have an area of 635 hectares. Intermediate egrets had propagated and built new populations along the southwest coastal area of Taiwan recent years. In recent years Great egrets and intermediate egret have nested in the wetlands.
