Recently a TV celebrity had no idea as to whether Tainan city has Qigu or Bagu. As such, we would like to introduce to you Taijian Administration’s best environmental education partner school to the north of Tseng-Wen River - Sangu Elementary School. Sitting in southwestern Qigu District of Tainan City, Sangu Village is where residents of southern Qigu District make a living. Literally, Sangu means three shares, deriving its name from the fact that three people, namely, Huang Tang, Huang Chi, and Huang Wo worked as a joint venture to turn the recovered sediment land into fish farms during the latter stage of the reign of the Qing dynasty. The name spread out as people moved in and formed a settlement. The geographical environment surrounding the community is mainly dotted alternately with agriculture land and fish farms. Sangu Elementary School sits rightly on the main road and the entrance to the community; it is easily accessible and has vast hinterland. It has the old Qigu sugar zone to the east, bulb vegetables planting areas to the west, and the geographical attractions of Taiwan island - Guosheng Lighthouse and Qigu Lagoon, to the farthest west, all of which are included in the school-based curriculum.

Fishery and agriculture dominate Sangu community. Muskmelons, garlics, and onions are planted around the settlement. The coastal area to the west of the community is home to 3,000 hectares of fish farms, where milkfish, groupers, meretrix, and oysters are primarily raised. As such, when you stroll in the community, you still have the chance to see residents cut scallions, string oysters, shuck oysters, make overnight sun-dried milkfish, and to feel the daily lives of the rural/fishing village.

As such, the school-based curriculum Sangu Elementary School developed based on the New Curriculum Outlines closely related to Taijian Administration’s preservation ideal. Through different learning units, this curriculum enables students to learn about the formation and evolution of lagoons as well as the issues with the lagoons at present or the importance of lagoon preservation through a field survey. Students exercise their five senses to write or draw the beautiful lagoon in their hometown. This will be implanted in their memory forever.
