In response to policy changes in the Japanese salt industry, Taiyen started construction of the Anshun Salt Works in 1919 and completed it in 1923. In addition to 354 jia (approximately 848 acres) of salt fields, there are also salters’ dormitories, and a water channel was dug to transport the harvested salt via small boats; the boats carried the salt via Sicao Lake to Anping, where the salt would be sold. The channel was the only waterway in Taiwan that was specially dug for salt transportation. At the time, Taiyen’s scale and equipment were regarded as cutting edge. Now, the area functions as a salt industry cultural ecology display-cum-activity area.
