Orthodox Luermen Matsu Temple
Orthodox Luermen Matsu Temple

The temple is said to have been built from straw by the local fishermen of Luermen to worship the Goddess Matsu. The temple holds "Tuchengzai Hsiang" to celebrate its establishment every 3 years. This is a tradition that has been unbroken for over 60 years, and has a deep historical and artistic significance.

It is said that this temple was built by Koxinga after his reclamation of Taiwan. It is devoted to Luermen Matsu (commonly known as ‘Kaiji Matsu’), who has a huge number of followers come to the temple to pay their respects to the Goddess each year.

Former Site of Anshun Salt Works
Former Site of Anshun Salt Works

In response to policy changes in the Japanese salt industry, Taiyen started construction of the Anshun Salt Works in 1919 and completed it in 1923. In addition to 354 jia (approximately 848 acres) of salt fields, there are also salters’ dormitories, and a water channel was dug to transport the harvested salt via small boats; the boats carried the salt via Sicao Lake to Anping, where the salt would be sold. The channel was the only waterway in Taiwan that was specially dug for salt transportation. At the time, Taiyen’s scale and equipment were regarded as cutting edge. Now, the area functions as a salt industry cultural ecology display-cum-activity area.

Sicao Dazhong Temple
Sicao Dazhong Temple

Situated at the southern tip of Beishanwei Island in the inner sea of old Taijiang, this temple is devoted to “Martial Zhenhai”. His name was Chen You, and he was said to have been a fearless warrior who won numerous victories. The Qing Emperor conferred him the posthumous title of “Martial Zhenhai”. To date, the temple has over 300 years of history, and is a religious center of the local residents.

Sicao Artillery Fort
Sicao Artillery Fort

Sicao Artillery Fort is also commonly known as Zhenhai Fort, and is a historic site. After the opium war broke out in 1840, it was built by Yao Ying, a Chinese official stationed in Taiwan, to guard against the British Army in case they invaded Taiwan. Now, only the fort wall (118.6m long) remains as part of the perimeter wall of Zhenhai Elementary School. Peer through the red brick cannon embrasures and take a trip back in time.

Luermen River Estuary
Luermen River Estuary

Luermen Waterway was of critical importance and was the gateway into and out of Taiwan (Taijiang inner sea). The breathtaking beauty of “The Spring Tides at Luermen” and “A Multitude of Sails at Luermen” earned it a place amongst the top 8 scenic spots in Taiwan. However, the construction of the Zengwen Embankment cut off its water sources to the North, and local residents started farming oysters near the estuary, forming a unique cultural sight.
